ENG - The Val Pusteria (Pustertal in German, Val de Puster in Ladin) is a valley in the Italian Eastern Alps. It’s about 100 km long, located between South Tyrol and the Austrian East Tyrol, in the east-west direction between Bressanone and Lienz, at the foot of the magnificent Dolomites. The Val Pusteria is really a little corner of paradise, the territory is characterized by wide green hills with dense forests with rivers that flow everywhere, from lakes with crystal clear waters to  the mighty Dolomites that protect this wonderful place. In addition, this valley is connected to many other beautiful places in South Tyrol, including Val Badia, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Valle Aurina and Valle di Anterselva and nearby Austria. I’ ve grown up in this valley, since I was a small kid with my family I’ve explored it far and wide moving the first steps on the thousand paths that can be found, collecting mushrooms, learning to know the environment that surrounded me and falling in love with it. So here to you 3 things to do if you go in this this wonderful valley for a short trip:

ITA - La Val Pusteria (Pustertal in tedesco, val de Puster in ladino) è una valle delle Alpi Orientali lunga circa 100 km, situata tra l’Alto Adige e l’austriaco Tirolo Orientale, nella direzione est-ovest tra Bressanone e Lienz ai piedi delle magnifiche Dolomiti. La Val Pusteria è davvero un piccolo angolo di paradiso, il territorio è caratterizzato da ampie colline verdi con alle spalle fitte foreste con limpidi torrenti che scorrono ovunque, da laghi dalle acque cristalline e dalle imponenti Dolomiti che sovrastano e proteggono questo posto meraviglioso. Inoltre questa valle è collegata con altri moltissimi luoghi splendidi del South Tyrol, tra cui la Val Badia, Le Tre Cime di Lavaredo, La Valle Aurina e La Valle di Anterselva e la vicina Austria. Sono cresciuto in questa valle, fin da quando ero piccolo con la mia famiglia l’ho esplorata in lungo e in largo muovendo i primi passi sui mille sentieri che vi si possono trovare, raccogliendo funghi, imparando a conoscere l’ambiente che mi circondava per poi innamorarmene perdutamente. Di seguito vi consiglio 3 cose fondamentali da fare se passate da questa meravigliosa valle per un breve viaggio: 

INTO THE WOODS -  ENG - Let the magnificent atmosphere of the Val Pusteria’s woods take you, which are not often frequented by many people but only by locals. Among tall trees, rivers and the fragrant undergrowth, there are wide and quiet paths, suitable for everyone because they are not too difficult and well beaten: you can find berries, multicolored flowers, incredible views and, with a little luck, even some shy wild animals like squirrels, hares and deer.

Personal tip: if it’s raining, instead of staying closed in your hotel room (even if it’s very relaxing hahahaha), I suggest you go for a walk through the woods. Do it if it’s falling slow and thin rain (not under thunderstorms, ‘cause it can be dangerous): during one of these days, the atmosphere, the scents, the low clouds and the fog in the trees will give you the sensation of walking in a fairy tale .

ITA - Lasciatevi trasportare dalla magnifica atmosfera dei boschi della Val Pusteria, che spesso non sono frequentati dalla maggior parte delle persone ma solo dai locali. Tra alberi altissimi, ruscelli e il sottobosco profumato si snodano sentieri ampi e tranquilli, adatti a tutti quanti perché non troppo difficili e ben battuti: si possono trovare frutti di bosco, fiori multicolori, viste incredibili e, con un po’ di fortuna, anche qualche timido animale selvatico come scoiattoli, lepri e daini. 

Personal tip: se piove, invece di rimanere chiusi nella vostra stanza d’hotel (anche se è molto rilassante ahahah), vi consiglio di andare a fare questa passeggiata tra i boschi. Fatelo se a cadere è pioggia leggera e sottile (evitate i temporali che possono essere pericolosi): in una di queste giornate, l’atmosfera, i profumi, le nuvole basse e la nebbia tra gli alberi vi daranno la sensazione di passeggiare in una favola. 

LAKES - ENG - The Dolomites have many lakes, each with a different and unique feature. The Val Pusteria contains some of the most beautiful of them, first of all the King of the Lakes or Lake Braies. Don’t let yourself be stopped or intimidated by the fame it has achieved, this place will always have a special place in my heart and when you see his blue waters you will understand why. 

Personal tip: if you want to avoid the masses of tourists, however, go to see the sunrise or sunset, times when the lake gives its best and where you can have it all for you. 

Another lake that deserves a visit is Lake Dobbiaco, located at the beginning of the road leading to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and is perhaps one of the most comfortable and accessible lakes of all the Dolomites. Take some time to admire the variety of colors of this waters and to make the trail around the Lake for admire the particular rich habitat, home of many species of flora and fauna.

LAGHI - ITA - Le Dolomiti  hanno tantissimi laghi, ognuno con una caratteristica diversa e unica. La Val Pusteria ne racchiude alcuni fra i più belli, primo tra tutti il Re dei Laghi ossia il Lago di Braies. Non lasciatevi fermare o intimorire dalla fama che ha raggiunto, questo luogo avrà sempre un posto speciale nel mio cuore e quando vedrete le sue acque blu ne capirete il motivo. 

Personal tip: se volete evitare comunque le masse di turisti andate per vedere l’alba o il tramonto, orari in cui il lago dà il meglio di se e in cui potrete averlo tutto per voi. 

Un altra lago che merita una visita è il Lago di Dobbiaco, si trova all’inizio della strada che porta alle Tre Cime di Lavaredo ed è forse uno dei più comodi e raggiungibili di tutte le Dolomiti. Prendetevi del tempo per ammirare le sue acque blu e per compiere il giro del Lago appieno in quanto è un habitat particolare ricco di flora e fauna.

PLAN DE CORONES - ENG - One of the main attractions of the Val Pusteria is definitely the Plan de Corones / Kronplatz, one of the most famous ski resorts in the Dolomites for the winter season. But not so many people know that this place has the same great beauty and potential even during summertime. By foot with long hikes or taking the ski lifts from Valdaora / Olang, Brunico / Bruneck, or from the Ruis plant on the Furcia Pass road, reach the height of 2275 m and admire a 360 ° panorama on all the Dolomites and the Alps. Think that you can see even the Großglockner (the highest mountain in Austria which is about 100km away). Personal tip: in some periods and with organized trips, you can climb to the summit with the sky lift to admire the sunrise (ask the tourist office of the town where you are)

PLAN DE CORONES - ITA -  Una sicuramente delle attrazioni principali della Val Pusteria è il Plan de Corones / Kronplatz. In inverno è uno dei complessi sciistici più famosi delle Dolomiti ma forse non tutti sanno che anche in estate lo spettacolo che regala è incredibile. Sia a piedi con lunghe camminate oppure prendendo i comodi impianti di risalita da Valdaora / Olang, Brunico, o dall’impianto Ruis sulla strada del Passo Furcia potrete arrivare all’altezza di 2275 m e ammirare un panorama a 360° su tutte le Dolomiti e le Alpi. Pensate che si riesce a vedere fino al Großglockner ( la montagna più elevata dell’Austria che si trova a 100km circa di distanza ). 

Personal tip: in alcuni periodi dell’anno con delle gite organizzate si può salire in vetta con l’impianto per ammirare l’alba e vi assicuro è un’esperienza che vi cambierà la vita. ( chiedete all’ufficio turistico del paese dove vi trovate ).

ENG - Obviously there are hundreds of other things to do in this valley but this is a good starting point and also a good way to spend a short time in this place. I recommend you, before venturing into the mountains, be sure to check the weather and have the right equipment. ITA - Ovviamente ci sono altre centinaia di cose da fare in questa valle ma questo è un buon punto di partenza e anche un buon modo di passare magari un breve periodo tra queste vallate. Mi raccomando prima di avventurarvi in montagna assicuratevi di controllare le condizioni climatiche e di avere l’attrezzature adatta.
